The image to SVG converters that let you download a traced SVG without paying are AI Vector, Inkscape, SVGcode and Adobe Express. Vectorizer.AI and Vector Magic let you upload and preview for free, but downloading the result requires a subscription. Recraft has a free plan, but its free images are public, owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use.

"Free" is the hard part of choosing a converter. Many tools convert for free and charge at the download step, and some free SVG files only wrap the original pixels in an SVG container. So the best image to SVG converter is the one whose free result you can actually download, edit and use. This guide compares seven tools on exactly those points.

Disclosure: AI Vector is our own tool. Details for the other tools come from their own product and pricing pages, checked in October 2026. Prices and plans change, so confirm them before you buy.

What to check before you call a converter free

Can you download the SVG without paying? A free preview is useful for judging quality, but it is not a free conversion. Check the download step before you spend time adjusting settings.

Is the result made of paths? An SVG file can contain an embedded bitmap. The W3C SVG specification describes this through its image element. Open the downloaded file in a vector editor: you should be able to select individual shapes and change their fills. If you can only select one rectangle that still looks pixelated when you zoom in, the image was wrapped, not traced.

Where does your image go? Server-based tools upload the file before converting it. Browser-based tools trace on your device, but that does not always mean nothing is stored: AI Vector, for example, traces in the browser and also keeps an encrypted backup of the images and results you work with. SVGcode and Inkscape process files on your own computer. For unreleased logos, client work or anything under an NDA, read the tool's privacy policy or use an offline tool.

Can you use the result commercially? Tracing your own image does not usually change who owns it, but generator tools set their own terms. Read the license of any tool that creates new artwork for you.

The converters, one by one

AI Vector

AI Vector's image to SVG converter traces PNG, JPG and WebP files up to 10 MB in your browser, and you can download the SVG with no account and no watermark. It works best on color artwork: you can set a maximum number of colors, edit or merge palette swatches, lock a brand color, adjust fine detail and smoothness, and remove a connected white background. The SVG export has a Design profile for further editing, a Web profile for lighter markup and a Cutter profile with fill outlines for Cricut and other cutting software. You can also copy the SVG code directly.

Tracing runs in your browser. The service also keeps an encrypted backup of the images you add and the SVG results you create; the privacy policy has the details.

Where it stops: like every tracer, it approximates. Blurry sources stay blurry, and traced lettering becomes shapes rather than editable text. Photos produce large files with many shapes. If you do not have an image yet, Text to Vector generates artwork from a prompt and traces it; that part needs sign-in and is currently free, with a daily limit per account.

Inkscape

Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its Path → Trace Bitmap command can trace a single color, several color scans or pixel art, and you can then edit every node in the same app. It is the strongest free option when the trace needs manual cleanup afterwards. The trade-off is a desktop install and a steeper learning curve than a one-page web tool.

SVGcode

SVGcode is a free, open-source web app that runs in your browser. It uses Potrace compiled to WebAssembly, optimizes the output with SVGO and processes images in the browser. It handles monochrome traces well and can split an image into posterized color layers. Color control is less granular than a palette-based tracer, so multi-color logos may need extra cleanup.

Adobe Express

Adobe Express's PNG to SVG converter is free with no credit card required and accepts JPG and PNG files up to 40 MB. It is quick for simple graphics. You have little control over the trace, and processing happens on Adobe's servers. Open the result in an editor to confirm it contains the paths you need.

Vectorizer.AI

Vectorizer.AI lets you upload, vectorize and preview as many images as you like for free, with an interactive preview to judge quality. Downloading production results requires a monthly web app subscription. It exports SVG, PDF, EPS, DXF and PNG, which is useful for print and cutting workflows. Choose it when tracing accuracy matters more than cost.

Vector Magic

Vector Magic works in a similar way: free upload and preview, then an Online Edition subscription to download. It also sells a Desktop Edition as a one-time license for offline use. It suits people who vectorize often and prefer a desktop tool to a subscription-only web app.

Recraft

Recraft is mainly an AI image generator that can output vector art, and it can also vectorize an uploaded image. Its pricing page states that images generated on the Free plan are owned by Recraft, appear in its public community gallery and are not licensed for commercial use. Paid plans add private images and a commercial license. Use it to create new vector artwork from a prompt rather than to convert an existing logo for free.

Which is the best image to SVG converter for you?

  • Convert a logo or icon for free, without an account: AI Vector or SVGcode. Pick AI Vector for multi-color artwork you want to recolor, and SVGcode for quick black-and-white traces.
  • Keep the image on your device: SVGcode or Inkscape.
  • Make a cut file for Cricut: AI Vector with the Cutter export profile, or Inkscape if you want to adjust nodes by hand.
  • Clean up the paths by hand afterwards: Inkscape for heavy editing, or AI Vector's Vector Editor Online for quick node, color and text fixes in the browser.
  • Need the most accurate trace and can pay: Vectorizer.AI or Vector Magic. Preview first, then subscribe.
  • No image yet: generate one. Recraft creates vector art directly; AI Vector's Text to Vector generates artwork and traces it.

How to test a converter in two minutes

  1. Pick a test image that matches your real work: a flat logo, an icon or a scanned sketch.
  2. Convert it and download the SVG. If the download asks for payment, note it and move on.
  3. Open the file in Inkscape, Figma or Illustrator. Click a shape and change its fill color.
  4. Zoom to 800 percent and check the edges, letter openings and thin lines.
  5. Check the file size. A simple logo should not need several megabytes; huge files usually mean too many colors or too much detail.

FAQ

What is the best free image to SVG converter?

For a free download without an account, AI Vector, SVGcode and Inkscape are the most practical. AI Vector and SVGcode run in the browser; Inkscape is a desktop app with full editing. Adobe Express is another free option for simple JPG and PNG graphics.

Is Vectorizer.AI free?

Uploading and previewing results on Vectorizer.AI is free. Downloading production results requires a paid subscription.

Can I convert a photo to SVG for free?

Yes, but photos rarely make good SVGs. A traced photo becomes thousands of colored shapes and a large file. Reduce the number of colors for a stylized poster look, or keep photos as JPG or WebP.

Do free converters add a watermark?

AI Vector, Inkscape and SVGcode do not add watermarks. Preview-based tools show their results before purchase, and the downloadable file is part of the paid plan.

Is it safe to upload a logo to an online converter?

It depends on the tool's privacy policy. Most online converters, including AI Vector, store a copy of what you upload. If the logo is confidential, use a tool that processes files only on your computer, such as Inkscape or SVGcode.

Start with the artwork you already have

Most people need a clean, editable SVG of a logo or icon, not a design suite. Convert an image to SVG in your browser, compare the original and vector result side by side, and download the file when it looks right. For a step-by-step logo workflow, read PNG Logo to SVG.
